SIBO Testing in Perth
Bloating that seems out of proportion to what you ate. Gas that feels constant. Digestive discomfort that flares after “healthy” foods. Constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, nausea, brain fog or fatigue that seems to come and go with your gut symptoms.
If any of this sounds familiar, you might have already come across the term SIBO.
SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It refers to a pattern where bacteria are present in higher amounts in the small intestine, where they can ferment carbohydrates and produce gas. This may contribute to digestive symptoms such as bloating, distension, abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits and food reactivity.
At WHealth Naturopathy, I offer guidance around SIBO testing in Perth as part of a broader naturopathic assessment. The goal is not to label every case of bloating as SIBO; it’s to understand whether small intestinal bacterial overgrowth testing may be relevant for your symptoms, then create a practical plan based on your results, history and overall digestive health.
What is SIBO Testing?
SIBO testing is commonly done through a breath test. After drinking a specific test solution, breath samples are collected over a set period to measure gases produced by bacteria (these gases may include hydrogen and methane, depending on the test).
The reason breath testing is used is that humans don’t produce these gases on their own in the same way. They’re produced when bacteria ferment carbohydrates. The timing and pattern of gases in the breath samples can give us information that may help identify whether SIBO is likely to be contributing to symptoms.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth testing isn’t perfect, and it should always be interpreted carefully. Results need to be considered alongside your symptoms, bowel patterns, diet, medication history, previous infections, stress levels, motility and broader gut health.
Common Symptoms Linked with SIBO
SIBO symptoms can vary from person to person, which is one reason it can be so frustrating. Some people experience obvious digestive symptoms, while others notice fatigue, brain fog or food reactions alongside gut changes.
SIBO testing in Perth may be worth considering if you experience:
Bloating soon after eating
Abdominal distension that worsens throughout the day
Excessive gas or burping
Constipation, diarrhoea or alternating bowel habits
Abdominal pain or discomfort
Reflux or nausea
Food sensitivities or reactions to high-fibre foods
Symptoms that worsen with prebiotics or some probiotics
Brain fog or fatigue alongside digestive symptoms
Ongoing IBS-type symptoms that haven’t resolved with general care
Not everyone with these symptoms has SIBO. Bloating and digestive changes can have many causes, including gut dysbiosis, constipation, stress, food intolerances, low digestive capacity, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, endometriosis or other medical conditions. That’s why proper assessment matters.
Why Testing Can Be Useful Before Treatment
One of the biggest mistakes people make with suspected SIBO is jumping straight into restrictive diets, antimicrobial supplements or intense gut protocols without confirming what’s going on.
I understand the temptation… when your gut feels uncomfortable, you want relief quickly. But SIBO care needs to be targeted. Different gas patterns may require different approaches, and symptoms alone don’t always tell us what is happening.
SIBO testing can help clarify whether small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is likely to be part of the picture (it may also help guide decisions around diet, herbal support, motility strategies and follow-up care). The aim is to reduce guesswork and avoid unnecessary restriction.
What Causes SIBO?
SIBO is often less about “bad bacteria” and more about the environment that allowed bacteria to build up in the wrong place. Potential contributing factors may include:
Sluggish gut motility
Food poisoning or gut infections
Chronic constipation
Abdominal surgery or adhesions
Low stomach acid or impaired digestive secretions
Certain medications
Stress and nervous system dysregulation
Structural or functional digestive changes
Other underlying digestive conditions
This is important because treatment isn’t just about reducing bacterial overgrowth. Long-term support often needs to address why it developed in the first place – otherwise, symptoms may return.
How Naturopathy Can Support SIBO Care
At WHealth Naturopathy, my approach to SIBO is comprehensive and individualised. If SIBO testing is appropriate and results suggest it may be involved, we look at the full picture rather than relying on one intervention. My support might include:
Targeted dietary changes without unnecessary long-term restriction
Herbal medicine where appropriate
Motility support
Digestive support
Stress and nervous system regulation
Constipation support where relevant
Gut lining and inflammation support
Careful reintroduction of fibres and fermentable foods
Strategies to reduce recurrence risk
The goal isn’t to keep you on a highly restricted diet forever (in fact, long-term over-restriction can sometimes work against microbiome health, food tolerance and quality of life). The aim is to calm symptoms, address drivers, rebuild resilience and help you understand how to support your gut in a more sustainable way.
SIBO, IBS and the Bigger Gut Picture
A lot of people who look into SIBO testing have previously been told they have IBS. And while IBS is a real and valid diagnosis, it doesn’t always explain why symptoms are happening.
For some people, SIBO may be one contributing factor behind IBS-type symptoms. For others, the issue could be microbiome imbalance, poor motility, visceral sensitivity, stress, hormonal changes, food intolerances or a combination of factors.
This is why I don’t treat SIBO as a standalone label. I look at digestion, nervous system function, bowel habits, nutrient status, hormones, stress, sleep and diet patterns together. The gut rarely operates in isolation.
SIBO Testing for Perth Clients
I support clients with SIBO testing in Perth through WHealth Naturopathy, with consultations available in person and via telehealth. If small intestinal bacterial overgrowth testing is appropriate for you, I’ll guide you through the process, preparation requirements, result interpretation and next steps. If testing is not the best first step, I’ll be honest about that too; sometimes other investigations, foundational gut support or medical referral may be more appropriate before SIBO testing.
Ready to stop guessing about your bloating?
